On Thursday, December 2, 2021,

H.E Dr. Samy Shabaan the Chairman of the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority gives a presentation regarding “Regulatory Infrastructure Development at ENRRA” on the 27th Annual Meeting of the forum of State Nuclear Safety Authorities of the countries operating WWER type Reactors.

H.E. started with expressing his appreciation for being part of this important forum, and that Egypt was chosen to participate for the first time as observer in the forum. During the presentation he gave a short brief regarding the peaceful application of atomic energy in Egypt, and that currently Egypt has over 6,000 radioactive facility and source being used peacefully.

He gave as well a detailed explanation for Egypt’s international commitments being an active member in IAEA since 1957, in addition to the international and national regulatory framework guiding ENRRA’s regulatory role in Egypt.

Dr. Samy highlighted as well the major milestones of the Egyptian Nuclear Program that started early 60s, for years several efforts were exerted, but only in 2015 a major step was taken by signing an intergovernmental agreement with Russia to build and operate four reactors of the NPP including fuel supply, used fuel, training and development o9f regulatory infrastructure.

Then H.E moved to ENRRA’s success story as an independent regulatory authority governed by law 7 of 2010, that clearly identifies ENRRA mandate and main responsibilities. H.E. focused on ENRRA’s main achievements in the areas of capacity building and knowledge management, adopting an Integrated Management system and Electronic Management system, in addition to the establishment of a Situation Analysis Center equipped with automated radiation monitoring system all over Egypt, and a Nuclear Security Support Center which is considered a hub for training at ENRRA.
