Description

As part Integrated Nuclear Security Support Plan (INSSP) Action Plan signed between the Egyptian authorities and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2014; a major milestone took place with the Physical Protection (PP) upgrade of the two Egyptian Research Reactors (RRs) ETRRR1 and ETRR2 at the end of its first stage of implementation in 2018.

It is worth noting that the IAEA INSSP provides states -upon request- with a systematic and comprehensive framework for reviewing their nuclear security regimes and identifying areas where they need to be strengthened. Egyptian INSSP is a three years renewable plan with a sub-action plan for each year. It is composed of five main areas that are as follows: Legal & Regulatory Framework, Prevention, Detection, Response and Sustainability.

The IAEA has assisted and will continue to assist Egyptian national authorities in strengthening its nuclear security related regulatory functions, including in the development of regulations and regulatory guides” said Muhammad Khaliq, Head of the IAEA Nuclear Security of Materials and Facilities Section.

It is worth noting that it is planned that the second phase of the Physical Protection of the second RR is expected to take place between 2018 and 2020. Furthermore, the first and the second phase of the physical protection for 7 sites (Two Gamma Radiation Facilities + 5 Cat. 1 Facility (Hospitals)) will be conducted between 2018 and 2022 and it is planned that the third Phase of Physical Protection of Radioisotope Production Facility (RPF) will be effectuated between 2019 and 2022.
