Site and External Events Design (SEED) review mission to Egypt

Upon ENRRA request and in the framework of Egypt’s plan to construct its first nuclear power plant (NPP) at El Dabaa site, a review mission from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) visited Egypt for eight days to conduct the Site and External Events Design (SEED) review mission, concluded on 29th of January 2019.
SEED Missions are conducted upon official request from IAEA Member States; targeted to provide them with the needed assistance at the different stages of the nuclear power program development, including reviewing site selection, site assessment and design of structures, systems and components, taking into consideration site specific external and internal hazards.
Experts from the IAEA from Japan, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and one IAEA staff member met with experts from ENRRA, Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA), the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency and the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics. The team also met with Prof. Samy Soliman “ENRRA Chairman”.
Prof. Samy Soliman, “ENRRA Chairman” stated that “Nuclear safety is a top priority for Egypt and the results of this mission will be useful for us as an independent review.”
Furthermore, and according to SEED team leader Ayhan Altinyollar, a Nuclear Safety Officer at the IAEA: “The team identified good practices as well as areas where improvements could be made through greater alignment with IAEA safety standards.”
