National Workshop on “Safeguards and Accounting Systems for Nuclear Materials”

Within the framework of the ongoing fruitful and constructive cooperation between the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority and the Egyptian nuclear authorities, and within the framework of the implementation of the comprehensive safeguards agreement between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the International Atomic Energy Agency with the aim of strengthening the regulTION and control of nuclear materials, ENRRA, represented in the Nuclear Safeguards and Nuclear Security Sector – Nuclear Safeguards Department, organized and hosted a workshop entitled “Safeguards and Accounting Systems for Nuclear Materials” during the period from 22 to 24 November 2021, the technical support was provided to the Egyptian Nuclear Material Authority.
Dr. Wael Abdel Moneim El-Gammal, Head of the Nuclear Safeguards and Nuclear Security Sector at the authority, started by welcoming the participants, he stressed the importance of cooperation between the various nuclear authorities in building an effective national system for accounting and controlling nuclear materials in order to fulfill Egypt’s international obligations. He also added that the workshop was specifically designed to meet the needs of the Nuclear Materials Authority and will contributes in strengthening the regulatory requirements with regard to nuclear safeguards.
Dr. Hany Ibrahim Khedr – Head of the Department of Nuclear Safeguards welcomed the participants from the Nuclear Materials Authority and explained that the objective of the workshop is to build an integrated and trained working team on the work of accounting for nuclear materials, and he also emphasized that the goal of applying nuclear safeguards is to limit all nuclear materials existing inside the Arab Republic of Egypt and ensuring their use in accordance with the relevant procedures and regulations.
It is worth mentioning that the workshop covered the historical background of international nuclear safeguards, the stages of development of the Egyptian system for accounting and control of nuclear materials, and the most important elements on which it is based, in addition to reviewing many scenarios facing those who work in nuclear materials and the way to solve them.
